Hotel Seagate to be demolished
The Seagate Hotel will soon be a thing of the past. Previously, it stood on the waterfront in Port Hardy, and was a landmark of the city. The Hotel Seagate was built in 1931, and was constructed to look like a Holiday Inn. It stood on a large plot of land surrounded by Fifth Third Field, and the building was constructed on the site of a former Park Inn. The city purchased the property in 2015, but the demolition was put on hold after Promedica announced it was moving its HQ downtown.
The former Hotel Seagate, which is now being demolished, is set to be replaced by a new hotel, according to Lucas County. The new hotel will include a new convention center and have more than 200 rooms. About 80 percent of the rooms will be extended-stay rooms.
The City of Toledo’s Port Authority and other entities expressed interest in purchasing the property in 2014. The Port Authority, the Building Trades Council, and the Toledo-Lucas County Commission contacted the hotel owner to purchase the property. After determining the needs of the community, the commissioners decided to pursue the purchase. The redevelopment of the former Hotel Seagate is expected to create more than 250 permanent jobs, including a hundred that will be temporary during construction.
Solheim Cup at Inverness to be moved to Park Inn
The Solheim Cup is a four-day international golf tournament pitting the best female golfers from the U.S. against top players from Europe. It will take place from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6, 2021, and will be the first time the event is held on the Labor Day weekend.
The Solheim Cup course will be redesigned to accommodate the competition. The course’s original design was created by Donald Ross, and Andrew Green and Tom Fazio have been restoring it to his original layout. The Solheim Cup course is ranked No. 65 by Golf Digest and features five challenging par-4s.
The tournament’s organizers are not lowering their expectations, despite the recent pandemic. They are still confident that the tournament will have a positive impact on the town. They anticipate around 20,000 spectators a day, with the majority concentrating on the first few holes.
